Can’t get enough fresh fruit?!

One of my favorite aspects of summer is the variety and quality of local, fresh fruit.  Fruit is my weekness.  I often think I could live on fruit alone. Strawberries, blueberries, cantelope, honey dew, papaya, plums, apricot, nectarines, I could go on…

In an effort to keep produce fresh and not having to head to the market daily I have found great solution to keep berries fresh.

Prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse and pop in the fridge.

The  vinegar kills  any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the  surface of the  fruit, and voila!  Raspberries will last a week or more,  and  strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft.

20 Life Lessons from the Dali Lama

Living overseas in Beijing I earned great respect for different cultures and especially enjoyed learning about the Dali Lama (and visiting the temples).  Working with Donna Karan I had a great opportunity to meet his holiness and hear him speak.  I recently came across an article that reminded me of the great thoughts of the Dali Lama.  Take a minute to enjoy and lets these thoughts resonate.
His Holiness, The Dali Lama
1.Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
3. Follow the three R’s:
–  Respect for self,
–  Respect for others and
–  Responsibility for all your actions.
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great relationship.
7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
8. Spend some time alone every day.
9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and
think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
14. Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality.
15. Be gentle with the earth.
16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

20. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

Importance of staying hydrated…

Summer is in full swing and it has been HOT!  Temperatures have been soaring to the high ninties and the heat index has been over 100.  Everyone gets excited about summer approaching but often forgets about the importance of staying healthy while vacationing over the summer.  I have discussed this before, but after returning from vacation and getting back to our summer schedule I have noticed more fatique, less excercising and bad habits.  One of the easiest ways to get back energy and motivation to be healthy is to drink more water.

Start your morning right by getting out of bed and drinking a large glass of water.  Even better, add lemon.  Drinking warm water with lemon boost metabolism and immunity as well as aiding digestion.

Another great way to encourage drinking water is by adding cucumbers or fresh fruit.  I feel as though I am at the spa when enjoying this.  It is very refreshing and tastes great.  Carrying water with you when ever possible helps a great deal too.  Purchase a reusable BPA free water bottle…esp with a straw (which also encourages drinking more).

Eating foods with high water content if helpful too.  Watermelon is a great example.  Enjoy it sliced, in salads (a favorite includes Watermelon, mint, and feta), even frozen.  Get creative and see the benefits immeadiately.

What are your favorite ways to stay hydrated?

Wishing I could crawl back into bed for a few hours…

Normally I am a “get up and go” kind of gal. I am up early, hope to get a workout in and like to be as productive as possible. This morning…not so much. I was out and moving and came home by 8am to feel starving and exhausted. What gives?! I tried protein…even some carbs…nothing was quite doing it for me. Enter my answer to everything…the Vitamix!

Lots of Kale, coconut water, H20, frozen strawberries, frozen grapes, fresh blueberries and watermelon…viola! Instant energy! Ready to once again tackle the day…and believe it or not, the kids love it too!
